Gauteng to undergo territorial review

Johannesburg - The Gauteng Provincial Government has commissioned a territorial review of the Gauteng city region, said Premier Nomvula Mokonyane on Friday.

This is part of the provincial government's efforts to build a more prosperous and inclusive city region, reports the Gauteng Provincial Government.

"On 30 November 2011, in partnership with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Gauteng City Region Observatory, we will be launching the OECD Territorial Review of the Gauteng City Region," said Mokonyane.

She was giving feedback on the government's progress in the provincial legislature on Friday.

The OECD is an international organisation which uses city region scales to assess key socio-economic trends and makes high-level recommendations that can assist governments to tackle the economic, social and governance challenges of a globalised economy.

According to Mokonyane, the OECD Review will serve as a diagnostic toward the review of the G2055 strategy - a long-term vision and development strategy for the province.

Following the launch, key stakeholders from business, labour, media, youth and church-based organisations and the public will be called upon to actively engage with the Gauteng Advisory Council on matters of public interest.

The aim of the public participation process, she said, was to engender the spirit of partnerships and attain a common commitment to work together to advance the province's development and build a shared future.

"All inputs received will be collated and assessed for contribution toward the drafting of a reviewed G2055 strategy," she said.

The Gauteng Planning Commission will work closely with the Gauteng Advisory Council to absorb, synthesise, process and finalise the vision and strategy for 2055.
