Johannesburg - Commuters who travel between Gauteng's biggest cities - Johannesburg and Pretoria - on a daily basis will be pleased to know that the Gautrain will be fully operational at the beginning of July this year.

This was announced by Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane when she officially opened the provincial Legislature on Monday.

According to the Gauteng Provincial Government, Mokonyane also confirmed government's plan to build a state-of-the-art high speed railway link between Johannesburg and the heart of KwaZulu-Natal in eThekwini.

"In line with our Vision 2055, we will develop a 25-year transport master plan which integrates different modes of transport in Gauteng, including the Gautrain," said Mokonyane.

She said she believed the project would lend a lot of expertise, knowledge and experience to other major infrastructure projects, including the proposed speed train between Johannesburg and eThekwini.

"Over the past few years, we successfully implemented the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Plan, which has drastically transformed the state of our highways in the province," Mokonyane said.
