Cape Town - Government is to ensure that stiffer sentences for rapists and murderers are implemented.
"Those who inflict such pain on any child, cause heartache to parents and traumatise our communities should face the full brunt of the law," says Minister for Women, Youth, Children and People with Disabilities, Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya on Thursday.
This followed Ms Mayende-Sibiya's visit with the parents of Nadine Jantjies, who was found raped and murdered on Tuesday in Wesbank in Kuils River, Cape Town.
The minister has already had initial discussions with the Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa, who is equally concerned about the matter.
"We (both ministers) will together look at ways of ensuring that all our children grow up and live in communities that are safe and that they enjoy the kind of security that will enable them to reach their full potential," she said.
Both ministers have agreed to meet within the next week to explore constructive ways to achieve the above.
Ms Mayende-Sibiya has urged all communities to join the national effort to create safer and caring communities where children can live, learn and play without any fear or threats.
"We have a common responsibility to ensure this," she said.
In support of the above, Ms Mayende-Sibiya said her department will forge relationships at all spheres of government, civil society organisations and communities to stop the disappearance, rape and protect children against abusers.
