Govt, SANEF to meet

Pretoria - Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will today meet with the South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF) to examine relations between government and the media.

The government delegation is expected to include some ministers and their deputies while SANEF chairperson, Mondli Makhanya, will lead a group of senior editors from across the country.

The meeting is expected to discuss the proposed media appeals tribunal, which has been opposed by many in the media.

It follows statements last month by President Jacob Zuma that the government remains fully committed to media freedom as enshrined in the Constitution.

According to a statement released by Government Communications and Information System, the meeting "reflects the importance government attaches to the media as a sector of society."

"For media executives, the meeting will present an opportunity to raise directly with government various concerns and interest to the sector," it said.
