Pretoria - Government says provincial governments and municipalities are working around the clock to ensure the victims of the recent floods in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga are provided with humanitarian relief.
More than 300 homes in Ladysmith were damaged by large hail stones when a storm tore through the area on Sunday night. It is believed that at least 10 people have been killed in other areas of the province. In Mpumalanga, 14 people have reportedly been killed in flooding incidents near Ermelo.
Government said in a statement on Wednesday that disaster management committees of the affected provinces continued to urge members of the communities to be cautious, and not dwell near river banks and low-lying areas.
Government Communications and Information System (GCIS) Acting Chief Executive Officer Phumla Williams said government had extended its deepest condolences to the families and friends who have lost loved ones in the floods and had noted with dismay the extensive damage caused.
"Government thanks the emergency services for their quick response to the situation and those community members and disaster relief organisations that have assisted in bringing about relief to the affected communities," said Williams.
"We call for more support from other role players," she said.
Williams said government would intensify its efforts to find those that were reported to be still missing and provide continuous assistance to those affected.
