Pretoria - The school principal at Adam Masebe in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, is confident that the matric pass rate at his school will be higher than that of last year.

Maubane Malathle told BuaNews that the school has worked hard to ensure learners are well prepared for the examinations.

"I am confident that this year's pass rate is going to be higher than that of last year. The learners attended extra classes on Saturdays and they had all the necessary study materials," he said.

Last year, the school achieved a 73% pass rate. The school has more than 1 000 learners, of which 142 are matric pupils.

Pakiso Ndhlovu, 19, a matric learner at the school confirmed the principal's determination to obtain a higher pass rate.

"I have been working very hard in preparation for the examination and I'm confident that I'm going to make it," she said.

She told BuaNews she wanted to study Tourism at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).

Alex Mashaba, 20, also a learner at the school said he wanted to be a soldier after completing matric.
"I am a little bit scared but I'm confident that I'm going to make it," he said.

Asked why he wants to be a soldier, he said: "I want to serve and protect my country."

The matrics are writing a two-hour English Home Language and First Additional Language Paper 1 and a two-and-half hour English Second Additional Language this morning - the first written exam of the National Senior Certificate exams. Practical exams kicked off last week.
