Pretoria - Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Public Protector, Advocate Thuli Madonsela, have agreed to improve cooperation between their offices.

Dlamini-Zuma and Madonsela met on Tuesday to take stock of Home Affairs related matters that the Public Protector has dealt with so far.

At the meeting, it was decided that a response protocol should be drafted to improve the level of cooperation between the Public Protector and Home Affairs.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to address problematic areas is also being drafted and is expected to be signed by the two offices.

A task team has also been formed to focus on the technical aspects of the cooperation framework, including the MoU.

The minister outlined the vision of her department during the meeting and elaborated on interventions being made to improve service delivery as well as the progress made in addressing the challenges that hamper service delivery.

For her part, Madonsela told the minister she was satisfied and encouraged with the department's efforts in improving service delivery.

The Public Protector received complaints relating to Home Affairs on an ongoing basis, mainly with regards to duplicate identity documents and marriages.

The department and the Public Protector agreed on a collective approach to address the administrative failures that led to recurring service challenges they identified.
