Hospital beefs up security after threats

Pretoria - The Gauteng Health Department has increased security at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital following concerns over staff safety, Heath MEC Qedani Mahlangu announced on Wednesday.

The step up in security comes after hospital employees, who were involved in anti-corruption initiatives, were allegedly threatened by fellow staff members this week.

Additional security personnel were deployed to the hospital on Wednesday.

The MEC said her department was aware of the allegations of bribery and misconduct at the hospital and appealed to anyone who had knowledge of the illegal activities to pass on that information to police.

She also urged unions to help the hospital's management in its efforts to root out corruption and improve the quality of care at the hospital.

"I would particularly like the National Health and Allied Workers Union to cooperate with us in normalising the situation in the hospital," she said.

The department viewed the threats as well as the allegations in a serious light, the MEC added.

The allegations of corrupt activities at the hospital had been reported to police, who were investigating the claims, Mahlangu said.
