Pretoria - A number of medical male circumcision camps will be rolled out in various districts of KwaZulu-Natal before the end of the winter school holidays.

Provincial Health MEC, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, said on Tuesday that the department was moving ahead with medical male circumcision camps during winter holidays as part of the provincial government's comprehensive HIV prevention strategy.

"Male circumcision and its links to HIV is one of the most talked about issues within the AIDS response over the last months with latest issues around camps driving potential change in the way male circumcision is practiced and implemented for the future in relation to HIV prevention," said Dr Dhlomo.

Since King Goodwill Zwelithini announced the return of the male circumcision custom last year during the umkhosi wokweshwama (first fruit) ceremony, the department has implemented a campaign to circumcise men and boys using a number of techniques and settings.

Dr Dhlomo explained that in implementing the medical male circumcision through camps, the various stakeholders improved the safety of circumcision practices and ensured that health care providers and the public had up-to-date information on the health risks and benefits of male circumcision.
