KZN prelims go off without a glitch

Pretoria - Despite prelims being disrupted in most of provinces, KwaZulu-Natal schools have not experienced any of this since exams started on Monday. This was confirmed by Education MEC Senzo Mchunu.

All provincial schools, which achieved less than 60 percent during last year's matric exams, have been forced by the Education Department to write provincially set papers. Other schools could choose between this or their own internally set papers.

The province had to postpone exams twice due to the recent public service strike. Exams are expected to be completed on 23 September 2010.

Although prelims in Mpumalanga are reportedly making good progress, the provincial Education Department warned that there could be disruptions from the Congress of South African Students. It has called on all schools to implement measures to avoid disruption of teaching and learning.

"Schools are urged to report to and maintain close contact with the police. Should there be any body who threatens or attempts to disrupt classes/examinations, schools must immediately open criminal cases," said department spokesperson Jasper Zwane.
