KZN Treasury ready to take on 2016

Tuesday, January 12, 2016

Pretoria – KwaZulu-Natal MEC of Finance Belinda Scott says all public servants, especially those tasked with dealing with public funds, must be ready to deliver in 2016.

The MEC on Monday said public servants must brace themselves for a challenging year ahead. She said staff in her department should always be guided by the courage and conviction that has always distinguished the Provincial Treasury.

"We are the face [of] the public purse strings. We are the ones who must say no to unnecessary expenditure and corruption. It is a difficult role to play, even more given the global and national economic climate, and the spending pressures on key service delivery departments in this province.

“Please stand firm but remain understanding and sympathetic at all times. I am at your side in all we need to do and say," MEC Scott said.

She made a special plea to all the people of South Africa to remain committed to the democratic Constitution and to stand for what is right and just.

"The alarming spate of racism … and the continued struggle for gender equality in this country and province remains of great personal concern to me. Social media in particular is an easy avenue to vent negative emotions with little or no cognizance of the consequences that may arise.

"In the past few months, we have witnessed this trend...  These negativities can only distract us from our core function.

"Together we need to face 2016 despite growing pressures, both financially and economically, with even less resources…" she said. – SAnews.gov.za
