License application, renewal process made easier in Ekurhuleni

Johannesburg - Motorists in Ekurhuleni can now apply for and renew their motor vehicle and driver's licenses at any of the 10 motor vehicle registration centres in the region.

"The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has improved its systems to allow drivers to renew their licenses on time and at the most convenient facility," explains spokesperson for the municipality, Zweli Dlamini.

To have their transactions processed, motorists need to bring the notice for renewal or a completed application form for a motor vehicle license renewal, if no renewal notice was received then they should bring their identity document and the applicable fee with all the options.

According to the law, all motor vehicles operating on public roads are required to have a license which is renewed annually.

"It is the responsibility of the vehicle owner to ensure that this is done, whether a notice is mailed or not, and failure to do will result in penalties," said Mr Dlamini.

A driver's license card, however, is valid for five years from the date of issue and must be renewed before the expiry date which appears on the card. This can be done at any driver's license testing centre in the country. It must then be collected at that same centre.

Ekurhuleni embarked on a publicity campaign a few months ago to remind motorists to renew their licenses and registration.

"We recently conducted a number of roadblocks and we discovered that certain motorists are driving vehicles with expired licenses while in some instances the drivers would be carrying an expired document.

"These acts of lawlessness on our roads cannot be tolerated our metro police are now cracking the whip against all perpetrators."
