Limpopo -  Gravel roads around Limpopo's capital city is set to become more user-friendly following the purchase of more than 200 graders by the province, worth R230 million.

Polokwane local municipality mayor Freddy Greaver delivered some of the graders in the Molepo Maja cluster area on Monday, starting with Makatjane village.

“This is the first grader received with other 52 units that the municipality received as part of the 233 units that will be delivered by the end of July,” he told the villagers.

Greaver said two weeks ago he made a commitment to Makatjane villagers that the first grader to be received by the municipality would be handed over to them.

“Earlier this year I made a promise during the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) consultations that the municipality will soon acquire new graders and each cluster will have its own, and today it's happening,” said Greaver.

Greaver said the new graders would replace an old fleet that has become useless due to continuous breakdowns.

“The graders must be well taken care of by the community as they are here to serve the needs of all communities within each cluster,” he said.

The mayor admitted that the grader would not create jobs nor solve other service issues like water, but it would improve the lives of the villagers as access to public transport and emergency services would be made easier.

Speaking on behalf of the Molepo Maja cluster, Kgoshi Maisha Molepo III applauded the municipality for delivering on promises made during IDP consultations.

“I am happy that Greaver’s talk was not just talk but it is driven by the need to improve the lives of our people. Our latest acquisition tells us that we stand a better future as our municipality is translating words into action,” said Kgoshi Molepo. – SAnews.gov.za
