Pretoria - All the necessary logistical arrangements have been put in place to ensure the matric exams kick off without any glitches on 25 October 2010.

About 642 691 learners will be sitting for the national matric exams with most provinces having reported that it was all systems go for this year's exams.

In Limpopo, 95 400 full time and 9 600 part time will be sitting for the exams to take place in 1 731 provincial examination centres.

"This year, we have about 49 500 candidates registered for Mathematics and 39 000 for Physical Science, the department has already selected 4 897 markers who will be distributed in 20 marking centres," said Limpopo Education spokesperson Ndo Mangala.

"All these centres will continuously be monitored by our provincial officials. We can confidently say that the department will leave no stone unturned in ensuring we have accident free and credible examinations," he said.

Although the province was among the provinces that produced a poor pass rate in last year's matric exams, Mangala said the department was hopeful to improve this year's results with a number of interventions being taken to assist learners. "As like other years, we are targeting a 60 percent pass rate."

The Western Cape also announced that the province is ready and prepared for this year's exams, with 47 055 full time and 6 128 part time learners expected to sit for the exams.

"I'm confident that the department has done all it can to assist the class of 2010 and will continue to do so up until the very last day of their examinations. While there is no way we can forecast the outcome of the results, we are hoping for an improvement in our learner outcomes," said Western Cape Education MEC Donald Grant.

Grant acknowledged the matriculants for the effort they had put in their studies during the year and even during the teachers strike, which led to disruptions in some of the schools.

"They have worked hard and we are proud of their efforts, I sincerely hope that their hard work translates into good results that I know they are aspiring to," Grant said.

The first week of the exams will begin with practical examinations, where learners will be sitting down to participate in the Computer Applications Technology and Information Technology.

The exams will end on 3 December 2010 and the results will be announced on 6 January 2011
