Luphoko family forges township hospitality in Atteridgeville

Sunday, December 29, 2024

The Luphoko family recognised the potential of township hospitality as a key driver for job creation and economic growth. Their vision culminated in the establishment of Asiye Guesthouse in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria.

Recounting how the idea came to life, Zakhele Luphoko shared: “It was one Saturday afternoon while we were building a wall around our stand. Two cars stopped and the occupants asked where they could find a guesthouse nearby. We told them there wasn’t one, and that’s when we realised the need for such a facility in the area.”

The guesthouse, which began operations in 2023, has since become a vital addition to the local economy.

Luphoko emphasised the broader benefits of township hospitality, noting: “Like tourism in general, it creates opportunities for others, such as those selling handcrafted products that visitors often buy.”

Located on the busy Nkomo Street in in Atteridgeville, Asiye Guesthouse is easily accessible.

Luphoko highlighted the sector’s importance, stating: “Hospitality benefits everyone, and it’s something our country needs for economic growth and job creation. Large corporations no longer hire as many people as they used to, so fostering small businesses, especially in townships, is essential.”

Running a business in a township presents unique challenges.

“Water and electricity supply can be unreliable,” Luphoko explained.

“We are working on installing solar panels and a borehole to ensure sustainability.”

Finance is another hurdle.

The guesthouse currently has space to add three more units but lacks the funds for construction.

“Saturday nights are often fully booked, and we have to turn customers away. We’re saving up to expand, as demand continues to grow.”

Security is also a priority for the business.

“We’re in a country with high crime rates, so enhancing our security systems is essential,” Luphoko added.

Despite these obstacles, Asiye Guesthouse has already created two jobs.

Future Plans

The guesthouse aims to improve its services by offering food and beverages.

“Currently, guests often leave to find meals at places like the nearby Nkomo Mall. We see the need to provide breakfast and drinks on-site,” Luphoko said.

The guesthouse also accommodates contractors who book multiple rooms for extended stays while working on construction projects in Pretoria.

Asiye Guesthouse has yet to receive government support. “Some funding would help us scale up the business,” Luphoko remarked. - SAnews.gov.za
