Pretoria - Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development, Bheki Nkosi, has instructed officials and technicians at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital to see to it that the facility's lifts are working optimally to ensure minimal inconvenience to users.
The MEC had paid an unannounced visit to the hospital following complaints that patients, especially the elderly with poor sight, had to climb up several flights of stairs to seek medical attention.
During Nkosi's visit, it was confirmed that some lifts had challenges and were sometimes not working due to vandalism and old age.
In a statement, the MEC expressed regret for the inconvenience to the users and assured all stakeholders that the department remained committed to ensuring that lifts were operational while the department was busy replacing old lifts with new and modern sets.
