Pretoria - Mpumalanga Education MEC, Reginah Mhaule has expressed appreciation on the progress of the Annual National Assessments (ANAs) in the province.
"Everything is progressing according to plan and there were no major incidents reported thus far," Mhaule said on Wednesday, during her visit at Moduping Intermediate School in Marite in Bushbuckridge Local Municipality.
Mhaule used the visit to advise learners to start planning for the future by focusing on their education, stressing the importance of attending classes daily, be on time and respect their teachers and parents.
"You must refrain from taking drugs and do away with laziness to do your homework everyday, do not imitate people who do not have any regard for life and education, your role models must always be people who can inspire you by being good, law abiding citizens.
"Learn at the early stage to plan your life, to develop a dream for yourself and your family and refuse to be defined by others, there must be no circumstance that must deprive you of your education and bright future, and learn to say no to bad tendencies and bad friends," Mhaule told learners.
About 591 050 learners from Grades 1 to 6 and 9 in Mpumalanga are writing the ANA, which started on Monday and will proceed until Friday.
The ANAs is a standardised assessment for Languages and Mathematics in Grades 1 to 6 and 9 and it serves as an instrument to diagnose and measure the progress made by the Department of Basic Education in attaining its goals set in Action 2014, Towards Schooling 2015.
The results are expected to be released in December 2012 by Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga.
