Durban - The Heal the World Media Organisation (HTWMO) has partnered with the eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal to celebrate Mandela Day on Saturday by helping six needy families for 67 minutes.
"As the members of the media in the province, HTWM decided to come together and respond to the call of President Jacob Zuma, who urged all South Africans to spend 67 minutes doing volunteer work," said HTWMO spokesperson, Masindi Mkhize.
Ms Mkhize said together with the municipality they have identified six disadvantaged families to help on this day.
"As the members of the media we believe that we can play a big role in changing people's lives for the better.
"For many years there has been a perception that the media is always out to destroy other people's lives, by reporting on negative things only," Ms Mkhize said, adding that this was their opportunity to change this perception.
Themed, "Celebrate Mandela Day - Thank you Madiba", the event will be hosted outside the city hall steps, in Church Square.
Over 1 000 orphans from around the municipality will also be treated to a show in the city hall auditorium.
The programme will include music, poetry and art to honour the life of Madiba.
The eThekwini Municipality has called on all city councilors, officials and citizens to perform good deeds for 67 minutes on Saturday.
