Medunsa students, management plot way forward

Pretoria - Students and management at the University of Limpopo Medunsa Campus have made some headway in resolving the issues that led to unrest at the campus.

The university's executive management committee and the Medunsa Campus students' representative council met on Tuesday to discuss students' concerns.

"Four issues emerged that included among others; accommodation for post graduate students, alleged maladministration and irregularities in the department of dietetics/human nutrition and the progression rules," the university said.

Students and management agreed on the steps that would be taken to address these issues.
Students also agreed to abandon acts of violence that had led to instability at the campus, the university said.

The student protests, which began last week, resulted in disruptions to classes and halted the registering of first year students.

For its part, the university's executive management has promised to do what it can to help normalise the situation.

"It is in the interest of the university community that normality should be restored so that academic activities can resume and continue without any interruptions," the university's vice chancellor and principal, Professor Mahlo Mokgalong, said.

Both parties were also keen to get the process of registering first year students back on track. Registration hours are expected to be extended in order to make up for the lost time.
