Minister's Twitter account fake, says Finance Ministry

Pretoria – A Twitter account, purporting to be that of newly appointed Finance Minister David Douglas van Rooyen is fake, said the Ministry of Finance.

“The Minister of Finance, David Douglas van Rooyen, wishes to place on record that a Twitter account which goes by the handles @douglavanrooyen or @daviddvanrooyen and purporting to be Minister Douglas van Rooyen and using his picture is neither his, nor that of his office,” said the Ministry on Friday.

According to the Ministry, the Minister does not have an official account yet.

“It is no coincidence that the accounts were created on the day the President announced his appointment. The Ministry of Finance denounces the account as parody, as it has clear intent to deceive, confuse and damage the image of the Minister as a person and an institution,” said the Ministry.

Minister Van Rooyen was appointed on Wednesday night.

The Ministry advised the public to visit www.treasury.gov.za and click on Twitter and Facebook links to access National Treasury’s official social media accounts.

“The office is following proper procedures to have the account closed. The impersonated account has been reported to Twitter,” it said. – SAnews.gov.za
