Pretoria - The mood at the IEC Results Operations Centre (ROC) is mixed with some party leaders filled with excitement while others are more sombre and are keeping their fingers crossed for favourable outcomes.
Preliminary results so far indicate that the ruling ANC party is leading in almost all the provinces, followed by the opposition DA.
As the results continue to flow in at the centre, the mood is becoming very tense with party representatives showing signs of distress.
Senior party leaders are expected to spend the day at the ROC to witness the recording and capturing of the results as they come in from the provinces.
Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is expected to visit the centre later this morning.
By this morning, almost 30 percent of the results had been captured from all the provinces.
The mood is expected to change later this afternoon when almost 50 percent of the results would have been captured.
More than 20 million South Africans showed up at various voting stations throughout the country.
According to reports, this year's voter turnout is higher than the 2006 Local Government Elections.
Final results are expected to be announced no later than Sunday.
The outcomes of the results in the provinces will determine which party controls the province's municipalities.
