Pretoria - North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Desbo Mohono, has appealed to communities to refrain from unlawful action and rather opt for dialogue and constructive engagement around their community development issues.
Mohono's plea follows renewed public violence erupting in the Bapong and Segwaelane villages outside Brits on Tuesday afternoon.
The residents were allegedly upset about the high unemployment and angry with local companies, claiming they had failed to create jobs for them.
According to the police, a case of malicious damage to property was opened after a truck was set alight and some roads barricaded with burning tyres during protests.
"Police will not stand idle and watch lawlessness and criminality, but will act to protect properties and the lives of the innocent," warned Mohono.
North West Road Traffic Management authorities have advised motorists travelling on the Brits-Rustenburg and Brits-Sun City roads to avoid the N4 Bakwena Platinum Highway.
The have also advised motorists travelling between Brits and Rustenburg and those travelling from and towards Sun City to use the R512 Old Pretoria-Rustenburg road through Rustenburg as an alternative road.
