Pretoria - The eThekhwini Municipality is currently assessing damage caused by the heavy rains and strong winds experienced in the area as a result of tropical storm Irina.
According to the municipality's spokesperson Thabo Mofokeng, some houses reported flooding but not damage. He said teams had been sent to various parts of the municipality and would report back this afternoon.
Beaches remain closed because of the high tides and restrictions regarding bathing at beaches and in rivers still stand, said Mofokeng.
Swimming had earlier been banned due to the discolouration and contamination of water and the rising of wave heights. Because of the high tides, shark nets have also been shifted, which may increase chances of shark attack to bathers.
Mofokeng said despite the heavy rains subsiding, the municipality remained on high alert. "The municipality is monitoring the situation throughout the city and in other areas affected," he said.

Over the weekend, Cyclone Irina was downgraded from a cyclone to a moderate tropical storm before heading back into the Indian Ocean.
It has been reported that at least 65 people have been killed in Madagascar due to the storm.
