Pretoria - The Hawks have arrested a second suspect in connection with the killing of two Western Cape policemen.

The 22-year-old man was arrested after police tracked him down to the Tygerberg Hospital where he is being treated for a gunshot wound.

The man is currently under police guard and is expected to appear in court once he has recuperated, SAPS said.

His arrest is in relation to the killings of Warrant Officer Matthee and Constable Cloete.

The two were killed while on patrol in Kraaifontein, where they were responding to a complaint by two members of the public.

Matthee and Cloete were trying to gain entry into a shack when a vehicle stopped a few metres in front of their police van.

"A male occupant of the vehicle got out of the car and shots were fired at the two policemen from behind them, wounding both in the head. Both members were robbed of their Z88 9mm pistols," SAPS said.

Last week, police arrested Sivuyile Sangovana in connection with the incident.

He was arrested at the Groote Schuur Hospital where he was also being treated for a bullet wound. Sangovana appeared in court on Friday and the case was postponed to 3 June.

National Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele congratulated the Hawks on the latest arrest.
