Pretoria - Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will mark the closing of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign by handing over houses to vulnerable groups in Ermelo.
The closing ceremony of the 16 Days of Activism will be held on Saturday in Chrissiesmeer near Ermelo in Mpumalanga, where Motlanthe is expected to hand over 16 houses to identified families which include women, people with disabilities and vulnerable children.
The 16 Days campaign takes place annually from 25 November, which is the International Day of No Violence against Women to 10 December, International Human Rights Day.
Held under the theme, 'From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World', this year's campaign focuses on increasing awareness of the detrimental effects of domestic violence on women and children.
The period of the campaign coincides with the commemoration of World Aids Day on 1 December and the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December.
This allows for an increased focus on the link between sexual violence and the spread of HIV, as well as incidents of abuse experienced by persons with disabilities.
Motlanthe will be accompanied by Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities Lulu Xingwana, Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza, Human Settlement Deputy Minister Zou Kota-Fredericks and senior government officials.
The Provincial Men's Forum and an NGO offering services to women who experienced domestic violence, sexual harassment, rape and adult survivors of incest, People Opposing Women Abuse, among others, are expected to give their messages of support during the event.
