Pretoria - North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison Desbo Mohono has appealed to motorists to reduce speed, which accounts for most accidents and deaths on public roads.
This comes after two passengers died and five others sustaining injuries after a bakkie they were traveling in overturned on the R506 Schweitzer Reneke-Matsheng road, just outside Schweizer Reneke in the North West, on Saturday morning.
It is reported that a Corsa bakkie with seven occupants was from Schweizer Reneke, heading towards Matsheng village, when its driver lost control of the vehicle on a curve. Speeding is suspected to have caused the accident.
A 52-year-old female passenger died at the scene of the accident, while a male passenger in his late 50s died on arrival at Taung Provincial Hospital.
Those who were rushed to the hospital include the 40-year-old driver, two males aged 36 and 54, a woman aged 45 and a two-year old boy.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide, reckless and or negligent driving.
Mohono conveyed her condolences to the families of the deceased and also wished the injured a speedy recovery.
She has called on schools and universities to intensify road safety education among young people. She also appealed to the media to report more widely and responsibly about the lack of road safety, and for celebrities and the entertainment industry not to glamourize speed and to wear seatbelts and helmets.
