Pretoria - The Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED) has expressed concern over the increase in murders and violent crime in the Muldersdrift area.
"The department is concerned that these unfortunate incidents will have a direct impact on jobs generated by tourism, leisure and related business operations in the area," the department said.
A decline in these economic activities would result in devastating socio-economic consequences for surrounding local communities, it pointed out.
The Muldersdrift area is in close proximity of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site and the surrounding tourism catchment area. Thousands of jobs stem directly and indirectly from tourism and leisure in this area and its surroundings, GDED noted.
It also acknowledged police efforts to bring those responsible for the crimes to justice and ensure safety in the area.
GDED appealed to residents and business owners to work with law enforcement agencies and government to ensure that the area was crime free.
"Building safe communities and neighbourhoods is not only crucial for the wellbeing of communities but it is also a critical aspect for generating economic growth that is inclusive and creates decent jobs in the province," it said.
