Thohoyandou - A group of Limpopo women who have been volunteering to clean natural springs in their village may soon have a lucrative business.
The 12 women have been cleaning two springs in Mphagane and Sheshe villages outside Thohoyandou since July 2011 under the national Adopt a River Project.
"Our municipality will make sure that the volunteers get funding so that the water from the springs is bottled and sold in the shops. This will create jobs for the volunteers and other community members," said Vhembe District Mayor Florence Dzhombere.
One of the co-founders of the project, Violet Munyai, 38, said she was happy to be able to contribute towards the preservation and protection of springs around her area.
"The springs are older than me and the generations that came before me. The two streams supply water to the community when the machine that pumps water from bore-hole is not working," said Munyai.
The project was highlighted as part of International Women's Day which was celebrated last week and as part of National Water Week.
