Pretoria – Five learners from the Northern Cape will compete in the National Road Safety Debates on 25 and 26 September in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.
The learners, who all come from five districts in rural and urban schools, were selected after competing in the provincial debates. They were then selected to represent their regions as the best speakers.
Road Safety Debates form part of rolling out the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011 - 2020 Strategy by creating a platform for the youth to discuss matters of road safety and also be educated on their role in road safety.
The Pixley Ka Seme District took first place during the provincial debates, while the Frances Baard District secured second place as the debates unfolded.
The competition was a collaboration between the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison and the Department of Education.
The aim of the debates was to empower the learners to be road safety knowledgeable and become road safety conscious.
The debates will further aim to help sharpen their analytical thinking, encourage team work and research skills, while building their public speaking confidence.
Although the learners are not yet of age to become driver’s licence holders, they have the power to meaningfully contribute towards road safety amongst their communities and one day become responsible drivers. – SAnews.gov.za
