New deputy commissioners for Competition Commission

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

Pretoria - Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel has appointed Advocate Oliver Josie and Trudi Makhaya as Deputy Commissioners of the Competition Commission to serve for a period of six months.

The two were part of the Executive Management of the Competition Commission, with Makhaya serving as Divisional Manager for Advocacy and Stakeholders Relations since 2012, while Advocate Josie was the Divisional Manager responsible for Cartels since 2011.

The appointment of the Deputy Commissioners follows the resignation of the current Deputy Commissioner of the Competition Commission, Thembinkosi Bonakele, which takes effect at the end of this month.

Makhaya and Advocate Josie will act in the interim, while Minister Patel commences a process to appoint one or more Deputy Commissioners on a longer term contract, in line with Section 23 of the Competition Act, Act 89 of 1998.

Patel said the interim appointments will ensure an uninterrupted service by the Competition Commission, which has a critical role to play in advancing an inclusive economy, promoting competition, combating abuse of market power and supporting job creation and small business development. - SAnews.gov.za
