Pretoria - The Transport Department has delayed putting into motion the amended National Road Traffic Regulations, which would make it illegal to drive a light motor vehicle with a licence for a heavy vehicle.
According to the regulation, which was to take effect on 1 February, people who obtained a code C, C1, EC or EC1 driving licence would not be allowed to drive a motor vehicle that requires a code B or code EB licence. This was to only apply to new licences issued from 1 February 2011.
The department on Tuesday said it has received submissions from various individuals and organisations and will engage and consult further on the matter.
"The representations received necessitated a review of the amendments. The review process led to a decision by the department to reinstate the status quo with immediate effect, in the best interests of South Africans," it said.
However, all other amendments, as published in November last year, will still remain in force.
