Pretoria – A new provincial council is to be launched in the North West to coordinate and monitor the implementation of programmes and strategies for the province’s response to HIV and Aids.

North West Premier Thandi Modise said the inauguration ceremony for nominated members to serve on the Provincial Council on Aids (PCA) over the next two years will be held at the Mmabatho Palms Hotel in Mahikeng on Monday, 18 February, from 9 am.

“The new council has to create and strengthen partnerships for an expanded North West provincial response among government agencies, NGOs, donors, the private sector and people living with HIV and Aids. Functional structures will intensify,” said Modise.

The new council will be charged with governance in matters pertaining to HIV and Aids in the province, and delivery of the mandates in terms of the North West Provincial Council on Aids Act.

Government departments, the business sector, Disabled People South Africa-North West, People with Disability, North West People Living with HIV and Aids, National Association of People living With Aids, are among the organisations that have nominated the 26-member council.

The ceremony is also expected to be attended by the North West House of Traditional Leaders, Sanco, Interfaith Council of South Africa, Traditional Healers, Cosatu, ANC, Democratic Alliance, COPE and UCDP -- who are also among the organisations that have nominated the 26-member council.
