NPA, SABC partner to educate the public

Friday, May 6, 2011

Pretoria - The National Prosecuting Authority has entered into a three-month partnership with the SABC to help educate the public about the workings of the criminal justice system and other operations at the NPA.

"We will utilize the SABC's public service radio stations to reach out to as many people as possible. We hope that this programme will address recent incidents of mob injustice, which are mainly caused by the public's lack of basic knowledge of how the court system works," said NPA spokesperson Adv Mthunzi Mhaga.

The campaign will be broadcast on 15 SABC radio stations, covering the entire country and in all official languages.

Prosecutors from all the different language groups have been selected to participate in the discussions and listeners will be invited to call in to ask questions about the topic under discussion.

The following key topics will form the basis of the campaign: Understanding the Criminal Justice System; Bail and Bail Conditions; Plea and Sentence Agreements; Withdrawals and Strike-offs; Sexual Offences; Domestic Violence; the Child Justice Act and Asset Forfeiture Processes.

The programme will be broadcasted on the following radio stations:
