Pretoria - Road traffic management authorities in the North West have set themselves a target of reducing road carnage by four percent this festive season.
This was revealed by acting MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Mosetsanagape Mokomele-Mothibi, during the unveiling of the provincial Arrive Alive Campaign for the festive season outside Brits on Tuesday.
"No effort will be spared towards the realisation of the goal to reduce road accidents and fatalities in the province.
"Increased visibility and coordinated law enforcement and crime prevention operations will be stepped up to squeeze lawlessness and crime to zero this festive season," said Mokomele-Mothibi.
The MEC said every motorist who "dares" to drive drunk or above permissible speed limits during this year's festive season must bear in mind that breathalyzers and speed machines will be deployed across all major roads in the province.
While stray animals will be impounded to reduce accidents caused by animals on the roads, pedestrians have been urged to avoid drinking and walking, to wear reflective clothing and cross roads only when it was safe to do as road safety was the responsibility of all road users.
The annual Arrive Alive campaign is aimed at intensifying traffic law enforcement operations and increasing visibility of law enforcement in an effort to reduce road accidents and fatalities on all major roads across the province.
A total of 31 258 traffic fines were issued, 356 motorists were arrested for outstanding warrants and 36 others for drunken driving during build-up law enforcement operations towards the provincial launch.
