Nyamwasa shooting investigation underway

Pretoria - The South African government is still investigating the motive behind the shooting of former Rwandan army chief, Kayumba Nyamwasa.

Nyamwasa was shot in his Melrose Arch home last week.

Nyamwasa's wife, Rosette, has been quoted by the media as saying the shooting was an assassination attempt - however the Department of International Relations says nothing can be confirmed until investigations are concluded.

Police have arrested people in connection with the shooting, says International Relations Director General Ayanda Ntsaluba.

Briefing the media, Ntsaluba, declined to give particulars of the suspects or where they are being held, saying investigations are still at a "sensitive stage."

"We can at this stage only confirm that certain arrests were made by the South African Police Force in this regard. The investigations are ongoing and at a sensitive stage and we thus have no further comment on the matter."

Nyamwasa who has been accused in his home country of trying to destabilise the country fled to South Africa in February. He was Rwanda's High Commissioner to India at the time.

According to Ntsaluba, Nyamwasa was granted asylum in South Africa - which he had applied for. However he could not confirm if they would extradite Nyamwasa should the Rwandan government make the request.

He said government was still trying to verify if the law provides for an extradition in respect of an individual or individuals who were granted asylum.

The DG also declined to comment on the reports that there was any international warrant of arrest for Nyamwasa.

"We need to double-check whether any form of legal proceedings, criminal or otherwise, can be taken against a person who has asylum and whether his status renders him immune to it," said Ntsaluba
