Obama in Soweto

Johannesburg – Soweto is a hive of activity this afternoon ahead of US President Barack Obama’s speech at the University of Johannesburg.

Security is tight around the vicinity of the university’s Soweto campus, with several streets closed to normal traffic and police vehicles blocking the road to the venue.

Despite a group of people protesting outside the venue, large numbers queued to enter the campus to listen to Obama, who is scheduled to speak at a town hall-style gathering.

“I can’t wait to listen to him. I think he is one of the most inspirational leaders of our time,” said student Anelisa Mbambo.

“I hope his speaking to an audience, which will be mainly young people, will serve as an inspiration to up and coming leaders. I am very excited to be part of this.”

As part of his Young African Leaders Initiative, Obama is expected to answer questions from South Africans and other young people participating from Uganda, Nigeria and Kenya in a televised event.

Earlier in the day, President Jacob Zuma officially welcomed Obama in Pretoria, where the two leaders held talks.

“We are pleased to be working with you, with a common goal of expanding trade and relations between our two countries," said Zuma in a televised media briefing. – SAnews.gov.za
