One family, one food garden initiative to tackle malnutrition

Pretoria - The provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the North West will plant a variety of vegetables and fruit trees for 70 families in Marikana, Segwaelane, Wonderkop and at the local home-based care centre near Rustenburg on Thursday.

The activity, which is aimed at encouraging backyard gardening in rural communities, will be led by Agriculture MEC Desbo Mohono, who will also hand over gardening tools and production inputs including rakes, spade forks, watering cans, fertilisers, garden ripcords and spray bottles.

This is part of the department’s One family, one food garden campaign, which aims to combat vitamin and mineral deficiency, which is the leading cause of malnutrition in many rural areas.

The activity also represents the call to make every day a Mandela Day.

MEC Mohono said: “It is absolutely essential to grow more food and our department is leading the way, distributing vegetable seedlings and fruit trees across the province.

“We are still pursuing Madiba’s mission, and we hope that all the beneficiaries will see it that way, and look after the gardens we are establishing in an effort to fight poverty.” - SAnews.gov.za
