Pretoria - Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will today and tomorrow visit KwaZulu-Natal to monitor and assess the impact caused by tropical storm Irina.
The tropical storm wreaked havoc in some parts of the province as it moved close to the east coast of South Africa recently. Some homes were destroyed. Durban's beaches had to be closed to swimmers due to 3-meter high waves, and authorities had to replace safety nets moved by the storm.
In line with its oversight responsibility and in accordance with the provisions of the Disaster Management Act of 2002, the Portfolio Committee is duty bound, in the event of disasters, to assess the extent of the damage and to monitor the disaster relief efforts of different spheres of government.
The committee will first meet the provincial government officials and thereafter visit the affected communities to establish how efficient government's interventions are.
