Durban - A pillar of peace was unveiled in one of the oldest Indian settlements in the country, Phoenix.

King Goodwill Zwelethini, Queen Mafu, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi and MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, Maggie Govender, attended the unveiling which took place at a local temple.

"This is one of those occasions in the life of KwaZulu-Natal which places this province and the country firmly on the road to lasting peace.

"Peace becomes a non-negotiable in the life of a country when its people realise that we all have the capacity to contribute to the building of a better country," said Govender who read the address on behalf of KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize.

This is the eight Sivananda peace pillar to be placed in the country. Sivananda was a spiritual teacher.

"This pillar will serve as a reminder to future generations of the importance of service in the process of building human beings, communities, a province and ultimately a wonderful country such as ours," said Govender.

A replica of the peace pillar was handed to former President Nelson Mandela on his 92nd birthday, to commemorate International Mandela Day.

"Madiba was most impressed by this peace initiative and supported this project since peace and reconciliation are close to his heart. We also acknowledge the support given by the United Nations, Amafa Heritage Council, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, President Jacob Zuma, Prince MG Buthulezi, Swami Vimalananda, and his Majesty, the King," said Govender.

She said the Sivananda Peace Pillars will be a source of inspiration to future generations as they demonstrate the universality of all world religions.

The MEC added: "As Government we would like to salute this initiative of the installation of Peace Pillars in our country. They shall assist in promoting peace and harmony in our province."
