Pretoria - The South African Police Services (SAPS) says all roads leading to Giyani and Thohoyandou should be avoided completely.
This comes amid rising tension in Malamulele, near Thohoyandou in Limpopo, after a municipal demarcation protest turned violent.
Residents are demanding to be separated from the Thulamela municipality and to have their own municipality.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi says the Public Works regional offices were completely torched, including five vehicles and one grader.
The local Masingita shopping complex has been completely looted. Mulaudzi said the current damage is estimated at R3 million.
About 65 suspects have been arrested for public violence and more arrests are expected, he said.
“The police want to reiterate that they will not relent as they seek to tackle those responsible for the violence.”
Additional SAPS members have been deployed to assist the local station, including top-ranking officers, to take command and control of police operations in the area. - SAnews.gov.za
