Pretoria - Police are optimistic that the gunmen responsible for opening fire on two Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) busses in Soweto, will soon be arrested.
On Friday, in two separate incidents, gunmen opened fire on BRT busses in Orlando East and Moletsane, injuring nine people, while one victim died at a local hospital.
Gauteng Deputy Police Commissioner, General Simon Mpembe told BuaNews on Monday that arrests were imminent
"We will very soon arrest some of those involved in the fatal shooting of innocent people, so that they can face the full might of the law.
"While everyone is embracing the 2010 FIFA World Cup, we are concerned about any form of criminal activity and we are prepared to deal with all those who want to break the law of this country by targeting people who cannot defend themselves," he said.
Police believe the two incidents were carried out by different people and were not linked as it happened at about 7:20pm and 7:40pm respectively.
Meanwhile, on Monday, the City of Johannesburg rolled out two new feeder services and a distribution service.
General Mpembe, who described the situation in Soweto as quiet, confirmed the deployment of a team of police officers who will ensure that commuters travel safely.
The new feeder services will transport passengers from Protea Glen via Thokoza Park into Johannesburg. Another feeder service will travel from Eldorado Park via Lakeview station into the City.
The distribution service will travel from Chancellor House and Library Gardens via Braamfontein, Wits, Hillbrow and the Art Gallery near Joubert Park.
Member of the mayoral committee for transportation in the City, Councillor Rehana Moosajee said the new roll-out represents 95 percent completion of Phase 1A of the Rea Vaya BRT system.
She said the achievement of implementing new routes signals the City's readiness and preparedness for a successful 2010 FIFA World Cup.
