Police hot on the trail of thugs

Pretoria - The National Crime Statistics, which have shown a decrease in many crimes, including murder, attempted murder, sexual offences and contact crime, is evidence that police are hot on the heels of thugs, says Deputy Police Minister Fikile Mbalula.

Speaking at the release of the National Crime Statistics earlier today, Mbalula said the statistics showed that interventions and strategies by the police were working.

This was due not only to the hard work of ordinary police officers, but partnerships with communities and business, the implementation of new laws and the positive role of the media.

"We are not saying to criminals and to South Africans that we have arrived, but we believe that we are on track," he said, adding that looking forward, the police force is ready to meet the challenges that lie ahead.

Mbalula thanked the police officers who were doing extraordinary work under the leadership of Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele. He said morale among the police was high and everyone was working well together.
