Pretoria - The Police Ministry will today release crime statistics for the period 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2016.
Police Minister Nathi Nhleko, his deputy Makhotso Sotyu, the Acting National Commissioner of Police Kgomotso Phahlane, MECs responsible for Policing and SAPS Provincial Commissioners will appear before the Police Portfolio Committee in Parliament this morning before briefing the media at 1pm.
In the previous reporting period, there was an increase of incidents in 16 of the 26 crime categories for which data was collected including murder, vehicle hijackings, robberies and drug-related offences.
The number of murders increased to 17 805 in the 2014/15 financial year, representing a 4.6% increase in the number of murders reported to police.
Car and truck hijackings showed a significant increase, with carjacking going up by 14.2% and truck hijackings increasing by 29.1%. The number of property related crimes reported to police decreased by 0.8% overall.
House burglaries decreased by 2.3%, while business burglaries increased by 1.2%. Robberies at homes and businesses increased by 5.2% and 3.2% respectively. - SAnews.gov.za
