Pretoria - Gauteng police have seized a large arms cache, which included rocket launchers, hand grenades and rifles from an outbuilding in Katlehong on Tuesday.
Acting on intelligence, a team of investigators made their way to the outbuilding of a house in Khumalo Valley in Katlehong, where they uncovered the explosives, firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
The cache included five mini Limpet mines, four detonators, two rocket launchers, six F1 hand grenades, a CSC rifle grenade, two AK-47 rifles, three Uzi sub-machine guns, a R1 rifle, a 303 rifle and a silencer.
Several gold bracelets were also recovered along with the arms.
National Police Commissioner, General Bheki Cele, said the recovery of the arms meant they could not be used for the destructive purposes for which they were intended.
"These people have accrued this stash of arms for one thing only and that is to wage war and you have done very well to detect them, possibly averting very serious crimes from being committed," he told members of the Crime Intelligence and Organised Crime Units.
Cele congratulated police who uncovered the arms, saying they had given him the best Christmas and New Year present he could have asked for.
He added that he was confident that police would track down and arrest those wanted in connection with the arms cache.
One person is being questioned by police with regards to the find. Police experts have been roped in to help with the investigation to determine the source of the artillery.
