Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma will bring joy to residents in southern Johannesburg on Friday when he hands over more than 200 new houses to residents of Kanana Park Ext 3.
Residents to benefit from the new homes include those that the President found living in uninhabitable conditions when he visited Sweetwaters and Thulamntwana in 2010.
Following that visit, the Gauteng provincial government and the City of Johannesburg began developing the Kanana Park housing project, which will incorporate the settlements of Thulamntwana, Sweetwaters, and the two smaller informal settlements of Doornkuil and Bhekaphambili.
A total of 3 101 houses are being built, 1 793 of which are government subsidised housing units, 756 social-rental units and 552 bonded units.
Parks, two sports grounds, two primary schools and a high school, a clinic, and commercial and light industrial sites are also being planned for the area.
Zuma will be accompanied by Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Minister Collins Chabane; Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Richard Baloyi; Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa; Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba, Energy Minister Dipuo Peters; Human Settlements Deputy Minister Zou Kota-Fredericks, Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and MECs from the province.
In addition to handing over the houses, there will also be a public meeting during which Zuma will address the community.
Meanwhile, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will lead a delegation of Cabinet Ministers to the Siyancuma Municipality, Northern Cape, on Saturday to assess progress achieved through the Anti-Poverty Programme.
Motlanthe will meet with the Northern Cape provincial government and the Siyancuma Municipality to review progress made since his last visit to the area in 2010.
He will also attend a public meeting in Douglas.
