Presidential Climate Commission to convene quarterly commission meeting

Thursday, December 5, 2024

The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) is expected to convene its 16th Quarterly Commission meeting to, amongst others, consider feedback from COP29.

The meeting will also consider the PCC leadership transition and have a discussion on global and national climate priorities.

“[During] the State of the Nation Address, President Cyril Ramaphosa established the Climate Change Response Fund (CCRF). Since then, the PCC held two stakeholder dialogues in July and October 2024 to solicit views to direct the conceptualisation and design of the Climate Change Response Fund.

“The meeting will be presented with an update on the proposals for comments and to ultimately endorse the PCC CCRF recommendation,” the PCC said in a statement on Wednesday.

Furthermore, the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Deon George, will also present an update on South Africa’s participation at COP29 held last month and “provide insights into what the international climate outcomes mean for South Africa”.

“Supplementary to South Africa undertaking the Presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20) on 1 December 2024, the meeting will receive a report from the G20 task force on Global Mobilisation against Climate Change, which will focus on advancing a green and just transition for the 1.5°C agenda.

“Amongst others, the PCC will [also] bid farewell to outgoing Deputy Chair, Valli Moosa, who has served since the Commission's inception, and the Commission will also welcome the newly appointed Deputy Chair, Dr. Crispian Olver, whose term begins on 1 January 2025,” the statement concluded.

The meeting is expected to be held on Friday, 6 December at the Women’s Jail at Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg. – SAnews.gov.za
