Pretoria - Government has thanked all South Africans, from all sectors, for working together and dedicating 67 minutes of their time to clean up their surroundings.
The main objective of Nelson Mandela International Day is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better.
President Jacob Zuma led a clean-up campaign in the Eastern Cape. This was accompanied by several other clean-up initiatives by government departments, private organisations and communities at large.
Communications Minister Faith Muthambi said: “No matter how small the action, the aim was to practice a healthier and cleaner way of living. This Mandela Day South Africans showed a spirit of selflessness, unity, volunteerism and dedication by participating in clean-up initiatives. Nelson Mandela lived a life of great personal sacrifice and service to fellow humans.”
The legacy of Mandela’s life and the values and principles he instilled in the nation must be upheld by current and future generations. “Our country is the perfect example of what can be achieved when people come together because of our history. Every individual has the ability and responsibility to impact positive change,” said Minister Muthambi.
