Pretoria - President Kgalema Motlanthe and the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Enver Surty are expected to be among some of the dignitaries attending national Human Rights Day celebrations in Galeshewe in the Northern Cape, on 21 March.
Themed Celebrating 15 Years of Human Rights, the celebration aims to remind and educate all South Africans about their human rights.
South Africa is blessed with the Bill of Rights that enshrines the rights of all people. Chapter 2 of the Constitution affirms the rights of every person to human dignity, equality, and freedom. It protects the rights of all South Africans.
The Bill of Rights also includes the right to freedom of expression, right to life, freedom of association, freedom of religion, belief and opinion, rights to education, health care, food, shelter, water and social security.
Senior State Law Advisor in the Department of Justice, Nelson Phakola said people should respect the Bill of Rights.
"Many people sacrificed their lives for this freedom. It is the responsibility of the current generation to protect this freedom." He said Human Rights are a channel to a peaceful democratic society.
