SA to host SADC Summit on Zim

Pretoria - South African President and Chairperson of SADC, President Kgalema Motlanthe will on Monday host the Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government at the Presidential Guesthouse in Pretoria to discuss the situation in Zimbabwe.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, the summit is convened primarily to discuss the implementation of the Zimbabwean Global Political Agreement, signed in 2008 between ZANU-PF and the two MDC formations and facilitated by former President Thabo Mbeki as the SADC Facilitator on the Zimbabwean dialogue.

"The convening of the Monday Summit follows a decision of the meeting held in Harare, Zimbabwe on Monday, 19 January attended by President Motlanthe, President Armando Guebuza as Deputy Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security, the SADC Facilitator Mr Mbeki, with President Robert Mugabe, Morgan Tsvangarai and Arthur Mutambara," the department said.

The Summit of Heads of State and Government are expected to be attended by all member-states of SADC, Mr Mbeki as well as leaders of the two MDC formations.

Zimbabwe will be represented at summit level by President Mugabe.
