Mahikeng – Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has told the country’s security services – the police and defence force – that citizens rely on them to ensure that the elections are safe and violence free.
The minister also urged them to use all powers delegated to them to bring about stability to the elections, as the country prepares to go to the polls on 7 May.
Minister Mthethwa said this when he addressed police and the defence forces at the Joint Tactical Headquarters outside Mahikeng in the North West on Friday ahead of the visit by Ministers in the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster to Itsoseng and Bodibe.
“South Africans depend on the security apparatus to have safe elections.
“We must pledge to work according to the Constitution to ensure the safety and security of voters.
“Nobody should feel that his or her rights are infringed in anyway in this upcoming election,” he said.
Minister Mthethwa also said all eyes will be on South Africa come Wednesday next week, as the country is a good example of a constitutional democracy.
The visit to the area form part of a nationwide engagement that the ministers have been undertaking to several areas where there has been instability ahead of the elections. – SAnews.gov.za
